چکیده

[1] The formation of Martian valley networks has been debated since their discovery. The relative roles of groundwater sapping and fluvial runoff processes have different implications onMartian paleoclimate. This paper uses a hypsometric analysis technique that has been tested on terrestrial landforms to analyze the hypsometric attributes of watershed basins in theMargaritifer Sinus region onMars usingMars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) gridded topographic data. On the basis of quantitative characteristics of their hypsometric attributes, the majority of the basins (covering 3/5 of the study area) look more like terrestrial basins of sapping origin, and a significant number of basins (covering 1/5 of the study area) are more fluvial like. The classification of the rest of the basin is less certain at the presently available resolution of the digital elevation model (DEM). Overlay with Viking photomosaic indicates that the classification is generally consistent with the morphology shown in Viking images. Although this analysis alone cannot make a sure determination of valley network origin, combined with other morphometric analysis, the results from this study are consistent with a valley network formation by precipitation-recharged groundwater sapping, suggesting a warm and wet climate for early Mars.

ارزیابی فعالیت‌های نو زمین‌ساختی با استفاده از شاخص‌های ژئومورفولوژیک در حوضه‌های آبریز کلان‌شهر تهران

Tectonic geomorphology is part of Earth Sciences, which deal with study of the interaction of tectonic and geomorphology. In other words it studies the effective tectonic processes in forming and changing the landforms. Geomorphic and morphometric indicators are suitable tools to the morphotectonic analysis for different areas. These indicators are used as the base tool to identify and recognit...

Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets Comparison of “warm and wet” and “cold and icy” scenarios for early Mars in a 3-D climate model

We use a 3-D general circulation model to compare the primitive Martian hydrological cycle in “warm and wet” and “cold and icy” scenarios. In the warm and wet scenario, an anomalously high solar flux or intense greenhouse warming artificially added to the climate model are required to maintain warm conditions and an ice-free northern ocean. Precipitation shows strong surface variations, with hi...

Morphotectonics investigations of the Garehbagh basin area based on morphometric indices, NW Iran

Morphotectonic investigations were carried out by the use of morphometric indices which serve as a tool of identification in regions with active tectonic warp. Landforms in active deformation area are produced from relations of tectonic and surficial processes. One of the most significant landforms underground is rivers that are extremely responsive to tectonic movements mainly uplift and tilti...

The Structure and Evolution of Ancient Impact Basins on Mars

The number of Martian impact basins, once thought deficient owing to a low number of impactors, has been significantly increased through the identification of structural imprints that remain even after nearly complete erasure of basin massifs. Five ancient multiringed impact basins were selected for detailed study and exhibit a systematic pattern of rejuvenation of the multiring plan through en...
